AGILPLAS Project: improving the production of Plásticos Xima thanks to IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things)

AGILPLAS is an application experiment carried out between a plastic injection moulding manufacturer, Ximaand a technology provider, Bosonit, expert Advanced Analytics and in technologies FIWARE oriented towards different verticals, including the Industry 4.0.

The main objective of the project is to improving the production system of Plásticos Xima, thanks to the use of a platform for the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things), implemented by Bosonit and based on the use of FIWARE.

When did this project start?

The AGILPLAS project began when we identified a financing opportunity in one of the verticals that our company has been targeting for a long time now, the Industry 4.0.

Why XIMA?

To develop the project, we needed the best partner. That is why we contacted Plásticos Xima. Together with them, we worked on creating an impactful proposal to maximise the chances of winning the project.

Finally, our proposal was selected and, since last year, we have been implementing AGILPLAS. Our Department of Innovation is responsible for ensuring the smooth implementation of the project, through continuous contact with Xima. This includes the monitoring of project activities and milestones, the identification of risks, as well as the preparation and presentation of all deliverables.

What has been achieved?

On the one hand, we have been able to improving production of plastic parts and to turn XIMA into a leaner, more integrated factory. On the other hand, we have been able to put in place a new company, called Elliot Cloudwhich will be in charge of marketing the Low-cod IoT platform, based on FIWARE and which has been enriched with new functionalities thanks to this project.

What technological components have been used?

The core of the solution implemented at Plásticos Xima uses Fiware together with other open source solutions. Specifically, the following components are used:

  • Orion Context Broker: functions as a data broker. All components send and receive data in NGSIv2 format to and from this component.
  • Draco: is used to persist all information passing through the CBO in a SQL database. This is essential for the project, as it allows historical information about the project to be collected.
  • PostgreSQL: is used as the database management system of the solution.
  • Grafana: displays all information (both real-time and historical) on a dynamic dashboard. This element is part of the RAMP platform.

In addition, we also use the standard NGSlv2 data format in all components.

Which ROSE-Aps have been developed?

During the AGILPLAS project, we have developed two different ROSE-Aps:

  • OEE-Computation: This is a python component that receives all the data from the OCB and calculates the OEE. It uses the availability, performance and quality data.
  • MDuino IoT-Agent: firmware for Mduino that reads the different digital inputs and sends them to the OCB in NGSIv2.
